department. what we do know is the secretary and her top deputies worked through the evening in what was originally thought to be an extraction operation. in other words, there was the hope that some of those who had come under fire at the consulate in benghazi, libya, could have been saved. it became apparent well into the evening that was not the case. at 10:00 p.m. it was reported there was one fatality. we have learned since then that four u.s. government personnel were killed in that skirmish in benghazi, libya. the exact details are not clear just yet. we're hoping the secretary will be able to walk us through some of that. we do know, as you said, the ambassador to libya, chris stevens, has passed away, along with shawn smith, also a foern service officer here at the state department. >> margaret, what set off this attack? >> reporter: there are

conflicting reports as to the level of coordination. we do know that yesterday was the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the united states. there were protests in the western section, including protests in cairo, egypt, at a u.s. embassy, where security was breached, and, of course, in benghazi, libya, where this incident occurred overnight. there is a film that has been circulated and is being blamed for sparking some anger among the public, but various groups have called for protests and sort of laid claim to responsibility for getting people out en masse. whether this is mob mentality or a coordinated attack is not yet clear. >> margaret, thank you very much. we'll come back to you. we're waiting for secretary hillary clinton to make a statement from the state department. we go now to nancy cordes at the white house. we expect also to hear this morning from president obama. what can you tell us about the

reaction at this time and what the libyan government is saying to the white house? >> reporter: charlie, the president was first notified of the libya situation by his national security adviser tom donellen yesterday afternoon. he first heard that ambassador stevens was unaccounted for and then later this morning told that stevens had actually been killed. the first u.s. ambassador to be killed by terrorists since 1979, one of only six in u.s. history. the president put out a statement earlier this morning, condemning the attacks and saying, "on a personal note, chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the united states. throughout the libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the libyan people at our mission in benghazi." he'll say more in that statement in the rose garden shortly. and we also expect that he will address the security situation, not just for state department officials in libya but at missions and for diplomats all around the world. we do know he'll be joined by

secretary of state hillary clinton at that event in the rose garden as well. he's set to hit the campaign trail later today, charlie and nora, heading to nevada and then to colorado. >> thank you, nancy. we'll get back to you as well. we're going to head to david martin at the pentagon. how is the u.s. military responding in order to help beef up security at u.s. embassies? >> the u.s. military is sending an anti-terrorist team of 40 marines from rodistan into tripoli to beef up security at the u.s. embassy there. the air force is sending planes down to libya, one, to bring back the four americans who were killed, but, two, to be on hand and prepared in case a further evacuation is needed. right now i am not aware of any orders to marines or any other forces to beef up security at other embassies either in the middle east or around the

worrell. but really the quickest way to improve security at an embassy is simply to close it for the day. that may well be what happens. there are obviously going to be questions about why security wasn't tighter at the consulate in benghazi, but u.s. officials point out that the security at a u.s. diplomatic outpost is first and foremost the responsibility of the host government. in this case, obviously, the libyan government failed to provide adequate security. >> david, charlie rose. what are they worried about on the ground in benghazi that might happen next? >> reporter: it's a mob situation, or at least it was. and those situations are always uncontrollable. the reports are that all of the

thank you so much. state to permit about to hold a briefing on the deadly attacks and the consulate in libya we are waiting to hear word of secretary of state and limit clinton to come up and speak again to recap what's going on for americans killed include in the u.s. ambassador in that this is a cbs news special report. i'm charlie rose at cbs news headquarters in new york. >> i'm norah o'donnell. secretary of state hillary clinton is making a statement about the killing of u.s. ambassador to libya chris stevens and three other americans in benghazi, libya. president obama is also scheduled to speak in the white house rose garden at about 10:35 eastern time. of course, we will bring that to you live. and now we want to go to the secretary of state, hillary clinton. she'll be coming through those doors there, and that is a treaty room of the state department. we have already heard from the secretary who has condemned these attacks.

margaret brennan is at the state department. margaret? >> reporter: that's right, norah. the secretary has already condemned the attacks, but such a profound sadness at the passing of u.s. ambassador to libya, chris stevens, but also three other government personnel. we know that one other person killed in this attack was also a career foreign service officer by the name of sean smith. what is not clear at this point is what allowed for the security breach to really domino into what became an attack from which these u.s. government personnel could not be extracted. as of 10:00 p.m. yesterday evening, it was believed there was only one fatality from this attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. benghazi is a city in the eastern portion of libya. as you know, libya had just gained independence really, had overthrown longtime authoritarian leader moammar gadhafi and was part of the arab spring. this was a positive story at the state department and very sad.

>> here is the secretary of state. >> yesterday our u.s. diplomatic post in benghazi, libya, was attacked. heavily armed militants assaulted the compound and set fire to our buildings. american and libyan security personnel battled the attackers together. four americans were killed. they included sean smith, a foreign service information management officer, and our ambassador to libya, chris stevens. we are still making next of kin notification for the other two individuals. this is an attack that should shock the conscience of people of all faiths around the world. we condemn in the strongest terms this senseless act of violence, and we send our prayers to the families, friends, and colleagues of those

we've lost. all over the world every day, american diplomats and development experts risk their lives in the service of our country and our values. because they believe that the united states must be a force for peace and progress in the world, that these aspirations are worth striving and sacrificing for. alongside our men and women in uniform, they represent the best traditions of a bold and generous nation. in the lobby of this building, the state department, the names of those who have fallen in the line of duty are inscribed in marble. our hearts break over each one, and now, because of this tragedy, we have new heroes
